Soldier wounded in Narathiwat

A soldier was seriously wounded by a gunman hiding on the side of the road in Narathiwat's Rueso district on Wednesday morning, police said.

The attack occurred about 9.10am as eight soldiers of a security team of Narathiwat Task Force 30, assigned to escort teachers to schools, were boarding a pick-up truck after a break at a tea shop at Ban Pupo in tambon Rueso Ok.

A gunman hiding in a rubber plantation opposite the tea shop fired one shot with an M16 rifle at the soldiers.  The bullet hit Pvt Suthipong Poonsawat, 22, who was the last man stepping upp onto the truck, in the left hip.
