158th teacher slain in restive South

A teacher was shot dead while looking after schoolchildren having lunch at a school in Narathiwat's Bacho district on Wednesday - the 158th teacher slain in the deep South since 2004.

Pol Lt Paradorn Kotetas, a duty officer at Bacho police station, said the murder took place at Ban Tanyong School at about 12.20 pm.

Doesn't seem like the government is doing anything serious to clean up the southern mess. I think they are more worried about changing the constitution.

Yes we all keep asking when will the government take action? What are the police and army doing. It's obvious teachers need round the clock protection and these provinces are part of Thailand so the Thai government must deal effectively with this madness. You cannot permit teachers to be unguarded you must provide round the clock protection using armed soldiers. The roads near the schools must be barricaded off to people coming to close to the vicinity of the school. There needs to be check points set up to stop people, inspect their ID's and search them for weapons and ask them what is the purpose of getting near these schools.

Where are the brave leaders that put down Isan Communist years ago go? They swept and terrorized those bad commies with dark forces and good intelligent(used Jon plonh Jon tactic). Is there any such leader left in Thailand? Why can they do the same thing in the South? Maybe Malaysia (base of terrorist) is too strong to mess with?

So many deaths, so little done, so many promises that ends up as hollow words, so many ideas with so little logic. I can recall a time in history when it was said by our enemies that it took 10 soldiers to defeat one Thai warrior, so ferocious were we. But now it seems we have become like toothless dogs, with all bark and no bite.

This should be the No 1 issue of the government, overriding all the money-hungry policies. This is an internal security issue unlike any other the country is facing. This government, and the ones before it who didn't do enough to deal with this, have blood on their hands.

"... for us it is the ultimate 'Mai Pen Rai' as long as the people who are being murdered are not one of our family members." That certainly seems to be the case. The dedication of these teachers is amazing. I can only attribute it to the love they have for their students.
