Asst village chief slain in Pattani

An assistant village chief was shot dead in Pattani's Mayo district on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Pol Col Kong-ath Suwankham, the Mayo police chief, said the attack occurred about 1pm as Muhamad Sukin Yaye, 42, an assistant chief of village group 2 in tambon Thanon, was sitting alone on a bamboo bed on the ground floor of his house.

Two men arrived on a motorcycle and one of them opened fire at him with a .38 pistol, killing him instantly.

Condolences to Muhamad, Think about him sitting alone at home and someone walks in, executes him and rides home to get ready for tomorrow. Most likely tomorrows victim is already identified.

Why don't the Army and Police hold spot checks day and night in the suspect areas-the so called red zones. Separating the killers from the general population is a basic step in defeating the insurgency. Never letting them rest is another basic tactic. It seems the Army and Police only react.

One day there will be a case study comparing the factors behind Malaysia's success in combatting its insurgency to Thailand's failure.
