Killings fail to dent farmers' enthusiasm

Farmers in four districts of Pattani want a scheme to revive abandoned rice fields in the far South to continue despite the killings last week of two men sent there to train them.

About 200 farmers from Mayo, Panare, Nong Chik and Yaring districts met authorities to rally support behind the project.

They were met by Pol Col Thawee Sodsong, secretary-general of the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC), and Pattani governor Pramuk Lamul at the provincial administration organisation office in Muang district Sunday.

It's easy to understand why this is considered a provocation against muslims. Plenty of rice fields in Thailand, go plant elsewhere for peace's sake.

@discussion 4 - There was a report of a small arms cache being found a week or two ago, just 2 or 3 M16s and some explosives. That is the only one I can recall.

Pol Col Thawee "has asked local farmers to look out for the safety of trainer farmers." Extrordinary!!!!!!!

What about you doing your job, Pol Colonel Thawee?

Brilliant dis#2, it's exactly the price pledging scheme that makes the rejuvenation of unused land. The price pledge is the reason why farmers go out in the sun do the back raking chore and keep farming sustainable. Not hard to think that in the past with the low rice price, south farmers just don't have the incentive to farm. Does not rule out my condemnation of these murderers of innocent lives.

Bravery of these farmers in the face of intimidation. If the authorities did not know then these terrorist certainly knew. The knew the car, the time , the place. Does this not seem well planned with good intel. Authorities start looking inside your own organisations, you have spies operating.

Will these people get the same "rice scheme" payments made to them? Doubt it.

Trainer farmers from Supan and Singburi better bring their own security guards. They can't rely on local farmers to protect them.Local government can't be relied on, their own people being guned down every day.
