Army reserve students may be drafted

Students who enrol in the Army Reserve Force while at school might no longer be exempted from the military draft because of a shortfall in recruits through the normal conscription process, army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha said on Monday.

It is reported that many Thai students are joining the Army Reserve Force because they want to avoid conscription. Army reserve students are usually exempt from the draft.

Some asked what do they do with all the news heads, thats a good question, I remember last year they created a new division ( 10,000 men) as a birthday present for Prem. This Army seems good at everything except keeping the peace.

Thailand maybe like playing as the next super power nation in ASEAN community. The best way to atract men to join in the army is increase the salary... and more benifits..

Thai people are waking up to the fact of just how corrupt and self-serving the army is.

the army need 80,000 recruits a year? what for? Thailand already has a huge army of 300,000 people (according to a quick Google search), which is twice the size of the UK's regular forces...I guess they must need all these recruits to run personal errands for the hundreds of generals in what are tantamount to inactive posts

    Thailand need education not conscription!

You cannot do 80,000 conscripts per year in Thailand? Must be many exempted because family is rich.

Thai Army should follow the US Military, by becoming all volunteer professional Army, with good pay and benefit. With today's defense environment, it is better to have rather small, but highly trained, best equipped, and very capable force, than big, poorly trained, poorly equipped, and incapable force, like what we have today. By the way, they should reduce the number of useless generals, so, the money can be used to improve the pay and benefit of the ranks & files, especially, those in the Deep South.

I always get quite confused as to why Thailand requires such a large military. 80,000 new recruits each year!

Is Thailand under threat from outside countries?....Don't think so.

What do the military actually do?....Try to keep peace in the deep south...not very good at it unfortunately.

Does it give the military chiefs POWER?....Yes I think so....power for the sake of power and to keep the government under its control!!!

Welcome to Thailand. Feel safe! It has one of the 10 top military manpower's in the world.
