Singapore to deport migrant workers

Singaporean authorities have charged 28 foreign workers and will deport another 53 believed to have been involved in the island's worst rioting in decades, reports said on Wednesday.

The riot occurred in the Little India district on Dec 8, following the death of an Indian labourer who was hit by a bus.

Hundreds of migrant workers from India and Bangladesh clashed with police and set fire to vehicles before officers in riot gear - including members of an elite Gurkha police unit - quelled the unrest.

On Tuesday, police said that 28 "active participants" in the riot would be charged and another 53 are currently detained and would soon be repatriated. Of these, 52 are Indian nationals and one is from Bangladesh.

Around 200 others have been called in to help with investigations, and will receive formal police warnings.

"Although they were physically present at the location of the riot, we are satisfied that their involvement has been passive and incidental," police commissioner Ng Joo Hee said in a statement.

They will be allowed to stay in Singapore and continue working on condition of good behaviour, it added.

Police are still investigating the traffic accident which sparked the riot.

Singapore relies heavily on foreign workers to fill a labour shortage, with hundreds of thousands working on the island as labourers, maids or positions in the service sector.

But activists have raised concerns about low pay, exploitation and poor living conditions, which have led to growing discontent.

Last year, bus drivers from China staged an unofficial strike over pay and conditions.
