An assistant village chief was gunned down at a grocery store in Yala's Raman district on Sunday night, police said.
Abdulromae Dimule, 37, an assistant village headman for tambon Yata, was sitting in a grocery shop when gunmen on a motorcycle pulled up at the store and shot him.
Mr Abdulromae was shot in the head, neck, chest and waist and died at the scene.
According to the shop owner Mado Ta-agmusae, the victim was on his way home from exercising. He had stopped by for a refreshment when the attack took place.
Police said they retrieved the bullet shells and sent them for forensic examination.
In Pattani, a man was killed and another wounded in shooting attacks on Sunday night, according to police.
The first shooting occurred about 10pm in Sai Buri district when Masaho Chetae, 37, was shot dead on his way home on a motorcycle from a tea shop.
In Yarang district, Maruyi Yeng, 48, was attacked by a man with an AK47 rifle while travelling on a motorcycle with a friend, police said.
He was shot in the right leg and left arm, but his friend was unharmed. Police also found spent AK47 shells at the scene.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up at Baan Tha Reu School in Pattani's Khok Pho district following a bomb attack last Thursday that killed a teacher and wounded two others.
The school was closed last Friday in the wake of the blast.
Patimoh Saemasae, 28, sustained serious injuries in the blast and later died from her wounds.
