An assistant village chief was wounded in a drive-by attack in Cho Airong district of Narathiwat province Wednesday morning, police said.
Pol Lt Kokiat Maneechote said the incident occurred at 6.20am while Yawohe Laerae, 39, the assistant chief of Kampong Baru village in tambon Bukit, was travelling on a motorcycle to a rubber plantation to tap latex.
On the way, the assistant village chief was followed by two men on another motorcycle and the pillion rider opened fire with a handgun, hitting him twice in the abdomen.
He was admitted to Cho Airong Hospital.
