10 die, 27 hurt in fortnight of violence

Ten people were killed and 27 wounded in 27 violent incidents in the southernmost border provinces in the two weeks Feb 10-25, according to the Region 4 Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc).

Ten of the incidents were linked to the insurgency,  and 17 were ordinary crimes, Col Pramote Prom-in, the Region 4 Isoc spokesman, told a press conference at Sirindhorn camp in Pattani's Yarang district on Thursday.

During the fortnight, insurgent violence included shootings and bombings.  They also carried out symbolic protests and publicly raised issues over violations of human rights and injustice in the judicial system to discredit the state power and try to lift the conflict to an international level, the spokesman said.

Government forces during that period arrested 11 suspects wanted under arrest warrants for crime and violations of the emergency decree, in two actions.

Four weapons - three rifles and one pistol - were seized.  The three rifles found during a raid on a Ponoh school in Pattani's Yarang district on Feb 18-19.  Two of the rifles had earlier been stolen during an attack on a defence volunteer unit in Pattani on April 23, 2012, and the other from Pattani police on July 4, 2003.

Government forces also arrested 35 drug suspects and seized 223,419 methamphetamine pills and a total of 2,320 litres of smuggled fuel oil.
