Four soldiers and two students were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded in Narathiwat's Rangae district on Friday morning, police said.
The blast took place on a local road at Bo-ngo village Moo 4 in tambon Bo-ngo, said Pol Lt Chayut Kaewnui, a duty officer at Rangae police station, who was alerted at 7.40am on Friday.
The bomb went off when a military team providing protection for teachers walked past. Four members of the team were wounded. Sgt Tjhanakorn Rairee-ang sustained shrapnel wounds to his right leg while Pvt Surapong Chanamet was hit in the right arm. Ranger volunteer Ekkawat Ponsud was hit by shrapnel in the back and ranger volunteer Theerawat Ekkara suffered a chest pain and ear damage from the force of explosion.
Two sisters who were walking behind the patrol team to Bo-ngo school were also injured. Ar-esa Dueramae, 9, sustained a shrapnel wound to her right leg while her sister Armeena Dueramae, 8, suffered a chest pain and ear damage.
The injured were rushed to Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Hospital.
A combined team of police, soldiers and bomb disposal officers inspected the scene and found pieces of the homemade bomb scattered on the road in roadside bushes.
The bomb left a small crater about 15cm deep and 15cm wide in the road.
Police believed the blast might be the work of militants wanting to target security officers.
Bo-ngo school director Abdullohman Jae-uma suspended classes on Friday as authorities closed the road to the school for inspection.
