Big Momma Carner has a big heart

With so many ladies in town for the Honda LPGA Thai this week, it's appropriate to talk about JoAnne Carner.

After around 15 minutes of meeting her, she growled at me and made me tremble in terrible fear of her.

I was having a go at caddying in Florida during a stop on the LPGA Tour many years ago.

I was inexperienced and treading on everybody's line and she had every right to get upset at me.

At the time, I really didn't know who she was but the 'Big Momma' made a big impression on me as the round continued.

At one time she dominated women's golf and nobody had more fun dominating than she did. There was a little Babe Ruth in her, a little Babe Zaharias, a little Walter Hagen and a little Shelly Winters, too.

The ground moved when she hit the ball. During these years in women's golf Jan Stephenson had the glamour and Nancy Lopez the youthful innocence, while Carner was happy going from tournament to tournament in her Gulfstream motor home, with husband Don and stopping here or there to do some fishing.

She said that she played better golf living in a trailer, and for a long while, no women played golf better.

Carner had a 13-year run where she either won a national title or finished second.

She was also undefeated in the Curtis Cup single matches and was the oldest player to make a cut on the LPGA Tour at the age of 64 during the 2004 season.

The 'Big Momma' won a total of 42 LPGA titles and easily qualified for the Hall of Fame.

The rather large lady, who looked like she was going to give me a left hook on the second hole, came over to me on the 18th, and with a great smile the three-time Player of the Year and five-time Vare Trophy winner gave me a hug and said that she didn't know that I was a Brit.
