Holders Germany crashed out of the World Cup to giant killers South Korea in the group stage on Wednesday as Sweden and Mexico qualified on a day of drama in Russia.

"We deserved to be eliminated," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "For us, this is a huge disappointment. But we have young players who are talented and have the potential to go forward. It happened to other nations before. We need to draw the right conclusions."

Germany finished bottom of Group F after a 2-0 defeat against South Korea. Sweden topped the group after a 3-0 win against Mexico.

Later, in Group E play, Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 to advance to the last-16, while Switzerland also moved on after a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica.

The Wednesday night results set up Last-16 matches early next week.

On Monday at 9pm, Brazil will face Mexico, with the match to be shown on Amarin TV. On Tuesday at 9pm, True4U 24 will broadcast the Sweden-Switzerland game.

South Korea's Kim Young-gwon scored in added time following a video review and Son Heung-min added another goal into an empty net just before the final whistle for the South Korean victory.

Four-time winners Germany, who had not been eliminated in a World Cup first round since 1938, were a shadow of their once dominant selves, managing only two goals in their three group games.

South Korea, also eliminated, had the best early chance of the game when Germany keeper Manuel Neuer spilled a free kick in the 19th minute but managed to recover quickly and slap the ball away.

Nervous Germany increased the pressure after the break and poured forward but despite a one-sided second half they could not find the back of the net before South Korea's last-gasp double.

Defender Mats Hummels admitted Germany's group stage exit was a "bitter" shock.

"It is a really, really bitter evening for us," Hummels told German broadcaster ZDF. "The situation is very difficult to put into words.

"We did not put the ball in the net, even though we had plenty of opportunities, including myself in the 86th minute -- I have to score from chances like that."

"We had plenty of opportunities, we broke our necks trying out there today," he added.

Germany qualified for Russia with a perfect record of 10 wins, but Hummels said the last time the team had played well was when they wrapped up qualification late last year.

"We put ourselves in this situation after the Mexican game," he admitted after the Germans lost their opener 1-0 to Mexico. The last game we delivered a good performance was in the autumn of 2017."

Korean goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo starts the celebration as German players realise their World Cup is over after a 100-minute match ending in a 2-0 victory for South Korea.

At Yekaterinburg, Sweden dominated Mexico 3-0 to move on to the knockout round, along with the Mexicans.

Ludwig Augustinsson volleyed a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from close range five minutes into the second half, and captain Andreas Granqvist converted on a penalty to help Sweden take control Wednesday and win Group F.

Despite the loss, and because of South Korea's win over Germany, Mexico also advances as runners-up in the group. Mexico has been to the round of 16 for seven straight World Cups.

Mexico's Edson Alvarez had an own goal in the 74th minute.

Defender Alvarez's own goal makes the seventh time at this World Cup that a player has sent the ball into his team's net - a tournament record with 22 matches still to be played.

Once Sweden took the lead, Mexican fans paid more attention to the other match, rooting against Germany, which could have passed Mexico with a victory.
