Onus on boxers after Supatchanin's victory

Thai weightlifter Supatchanin Khamhaeng comfortably won the gold medal in the women's over-63kg division at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

The 17-year-old from Nakhon Si Thammarat lifted 104kg in snatch and 132kg in clean and jerk for a total of 236kg on the final day of the weightlifting competition.

Nicknamed Janny, the Thai beat runner-up Dilara Narin by a massive 18kg after the Turk managed 92kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk for a combined weight of 218kg.

Dolera Davronova of Uzbekistan was third with a total effort of 217kg at the Europe Pavilion in Argentina's capital.

Kanah Andrews-Nahu of New Zealand, one of the pre-tournament favourites, finished fourth.

Supatchanin will receive a bonus of two million baht from the government.

Under the National Development Fund's bonus scheme for the Youth Olympics, a gold medal is worth two million baht, a silver one million baht and a bronze 500,000 baht.

The Thai weightlifting team will return home from the third Youth Olympics with one gold and two silver medals.

Thailand and Ukraine are joint 13th in the medal standings with two gold, three silver and one bronze medals each.

Leaders Russia have 21 golds and are followed by Hungary (12), Japan (nine), China (eight), Italy (seven) and Iran (six). The Games end on Friday.

Thailand, who aim to win three gold medals in Argentina, now pin their hopes on boxers.

Among Thailand's three male and two female fighters, Porntip Buapa is seen as the best bet for gold.

Lady Luck is smiling on Porntip as she will begin her campaign in the semi-finals of the women's 60kg division following Saturday's draw.

Atichai Phoemsap, also in the 60kg class, is considered Thailand's top hope in the men's event.

Somchai Poonsawat, technical chief of the Thailand Boxing Association, is confident that his fighters will win at least one medal.

"Our boxers are lucky in the draw particularly June [Porntip] who will start in the semi-finals," Somchai said.

"In the men's competition, Dear [Atichai] is our top hope. I think he can fight anyone. He has made fast progress after competing in several overseas events. His confidence and morale is high.

"I am confident that we will win at least one medal"

The women's boxers are coached by Cuban Juan Fontanills, who guided three Thai men's fighters -- Somluck Kamsing, Wijarn Ponlid and Manus Boonjumnong -- to win Olympic gold medals.

IOC member Baumann dies

Swiss IOC member Patrick Baumann, a central figure in the Olympic movement and the sport of basketball, has died at the age of 51.

Baumann suffered a heart attack yesterday during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

"This is a great shock, which has hit us all very hard. We can hardly believe this terrible news," said IOC president Thomas Bach.

An IOC member since 2007, Baumann recently chaired the evaluation commission for the 2024 Olympic Games and was then vice-chair of the Coordination Commission for those Games after Paris were awarded the right to host them. He was also president of the IOC's Coordination Commission for the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 and the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028.

Baumann was also a member of the executive committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) and president of SportAccord.
