Thailand ready for Myanmar

Thailand are looking forward to securing a semi-final berth at the AFF Suzuki Cup with a win over Myanmar tonight.

The Group A match at Rajamangala National Stadium kicks off at 8.20pm with Vietnam taking on the Philippines at 5.30pm.

Thailand, who edged the Philippines in their opening match, are sweating on the fitness of playmaker Datsakorn Thonglao who got injured and was substituted in the first match.

"Datsakorn is our important player. His absence would be a blow. I hope he can play," Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer said yesterday.

"We will wait until the last minute to decide if he can play."

Sumanya Purisai, who replaced Datsakorn in the Philippines match, is likely to start if Datsakorn fails to pass fitness tests.

Schaefer said it would not be easy to beat Myanmar, who held Vietnam to a 1-1 draw in their first game.

"They are not a small team. Teams in the Asean region have improved," Schaefer said. "We need the same powerful display we did against the Philippines. We are ready for the match. The spirit in our camp is very, very high."

Schaefer is wary of the threat from 20-year-old Yangon United star Kyi Lin.

"I have watched the DVD of Myanmar's game against Vietnam. He is dangerous and we must stop him by denying him possession," he said.

He urged Thai fans to pack the stadium after only a few thousand fans watched Thailand play the Philippines at the 45,000-capacity venue on Saturday following a heavy downpour.

After stunning odds-on favourites Vietnam, Myanmar manager Tin Myint Aung said another upset was possible.

"In football, nothing is certain. Just look what happened last night [in Group B] with Singapore beating [reigning champions and co-hosts] Malaysia 3-0," he said. "Our team is young and does not have experience but I have belief in my team."

"We know Thailand's weak points and have a strategy," he said. "You will see tomorrow what it is."
