FAT election controversy far from over

Chonburi FC deputy chairman Annop Singtothong claimed yesterday acting Football Association of Thailand president Worawi Makudi has tried to change the FAT electoral code because he will lose in the upcoming poll if the current rules remain intact.

He said most clubs under the FAT did not accept Worawi's attempt to reduce the number of voters in the FAT presidential election from about 180 to 72 because they would lose their voting rights.

"Worawi knows he will lose in the election so he has tried to change the rules," Annop said.

He said most Thai fans did not want him and claimed Worawi had lost support from Buriram United chairman Newin Chidchob and his mentor and predecessor Vijitr Getkaew.

Annop, Newin and Vijitr reportedly back former national team manager Virach Charnpanich in the upcoming election.

Annop demanded that the election be held by mid-July as Thailand's sports law states that an election of chief of a sporting association must take place within 30 days of the incumbent's term expiring.

Worawi's third two-year term ended on June 16. Fifa says the election should be held by Sept 30.

Worawi, who is also a Fifa executive member, has said that the FAT must adopted its revised regulations to comply with Fifa statutes before its presidential election can be held.

Worawi reiterated yesterday he was not behind the reduction in numbers. He said it was Fifa which set the number after it had thoroughly studied Thailand's football structure.

The 61-year-old Worawi said he would call a meeting of FAT members to approve its revised electoral code and then hold its presidential election within 45 days.
