Phuket Raceweek starts at Cape Panwa

PHUKET : The 37-strong fleet at the 10th Anniversary Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek enjoyed some fast and furious racing on the first day yesterday.

Three boats lined up in the IRC Racing One including the former Team Premier which has been renamed Oi with Peter Ahern at the helm.

Oi won yesterday's first race ahead of Reichel Pugh 45 Katsu, skippered by Ben Copley, in second, and Thai favourite Wan Ma Rang, skippered by Kevin Whitcraft.

Katsu took the second race with Oi coming in second and Wan Ma Rang third.

Benetau 44.7 Fujin, formerly Ichi Ban, skippered by Peter Sorensen, had the best results in the IRC Racing Two with two wins.

In the Cruising Class, Ireland's entry, Peter Wood, sailing Windstar, led Rob Azzopardi's Dreamtime. In the Firefly 850, defending champion Voodoo, skippered by Hans Rahmann, got off to a slow start finishing second and third on the opening day.

John Newnham and his Twin Sharks claimed two wins to take the early lead in the series.

The competition continues today and ends on Sunday.
