Thailand ease past Myanmar

Malaysia stun co-hosts and defending champions Singapore to reach last four of Suzuki Cup

Singapore - Thailand beat Myanmar 2-0 in the AFF Suzuki Cup on Saturday night to end their Group B campaign with a perfect record.

Tanaboon Kesarat, left, scores Thailand's opening goal against Myanmar.

In the other Group B game, Malaysia shocked hosts and defending champions Singapore 3-1 to join Thailand in the semi-finals of the Asean championship.

Thailand will meet Group A runners-up the Philippines and Malaysia will take on Group A winners Vietnam in the last four to be played over two legs.

At Jalan Besar Stadium, Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang made several changes to the starting line-up to give chances to fringe players.

Despite resting several key players, Thailand were still much too strong for Myanmar.

Tanaboon Ketsarat opened the scoring for Thailand after 12 minutes and Prakit Deeprom made it 2-0 seven minutes from time.

Thailand beat Singapore 2-1 and defeated Malaysia 3-2 in their first two games.

Thailand have won the Asean title three times, the last in 2002. They lost to Singapore in the previous final in 2012 as the Lions claimed a record fourth crown.

The Thais could get more than 10 million baht in bonus from sponsors if they regain the title.

In Hanoi, The Philippines coach Thomas Dooley believes his players can get their mojo back for the semi-finals.

The Philippines lost 3-1 to Vietnam on Friday but both advanced to the last four with the hosts topping Group A.

Big wins over Laos (4-1) and Indonesia (4-0) had already propelled the Philippines into the last four for a third straight time and Dooley felt they lacked the necessary spark to trouble Vietnam.

“I noticed in the warm-up that we were missing that spark,” said the American, who fielded his best available team in the 3-1 defeat.

“You have to have that spark and it was not there. Today we did not play the way we wanted to play and in the end we lost the game.”

But with a week before the semi-final first leg against the winners of Group B in Manila, Dooley has time to re-energise the Azkals.

“I am sure they will play better after a week’s rest,” he said. “We still want to win the championship. The next game is a must-win, and I believe in my players that they can do it.

“If it is against Thailand it will not be an easy game. They play in a similar way to Vietnam.”
