Patama eyes top Asia post

Thai badminton chief Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul will run for president of the Badminton Asia Confederation.

The BAC is seeking a new president to replace Malaysia's Mohd Nadzmi Bin Mohd Salleh whose four-year term expires next month.

Patama said yesterday that she wanted to see a woman run an international sporting body.

If she is successful in the April 25 election in Wuhan, China, she would work for the players, she said.

Patama said it would also be a chance for her to promote Thailand as one of Asia's leading countries in terms of badminton development.

To get the job, Patama must beat two other candidates, Anton Aditya Subowo of Indonesia and BAC vice-presidnet Akhilesh Das Gupta of India.

Patama is also one of 16 candidates vying for six vice-president seats.

BAT general-secretary Nahathai Sornprachum, who is also a BAC technical official, said Patama had a good chance to win the election because she is backed by many countries.

"Many countries have promised to give her support,'' he said.

"If she does win, she will be the first Thai and first woman to lead the BAC."

Patama was elected BAT president in August, 2013 replacing Charoen Wattanasin who stepped down.

Patama last week received an award for her contribution to the sport from the Sports Writers Association of Thailand.

Meanwhile, Ratchanok Intanon crashed out in the second round of the BWF SuperSeries Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur last night.

The Thai No.8 lost to unseeded Japanese Nozomi Okuhaha 12-21, 11-21 in just 41 minutes.
