Thailand target rugby gold

Thai rugby chiefs are targeting the women's gold medal when the sport returns to the SEA Games for the first time in eight years next month.

Thai athletes and officials at yesterday's ceremony to receive uniforms from Grand Sport.

There will be two events, men's and women's, in rugby sevens at the SEA Games in Singapore and Thailand hope to shine in the female discipline.

"Our women are the number one in Asean,'' Suparat Alpach, general secretary of the Thai Rugby Union, said yesterday.

"They have performed well in many international tournaments."

The Thai women are likely to face hosts Singapore in the final but Suparat is confident that his players are much stronger.

The last time they met was at last year's Asian Games in South Korea where Thailand won 32-5 on their way to finishing fifth.

"We have been training hard since January and we are mentally and physically strong,'' he said.

Key player Boonyasa Boonrak is recovering from an injury and will be fit for the tournament, he said.

In the men's event, Thailand will face tough tasks against the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore, and Suparat eye a top-three finish.

"The three countries are stronger physically. It is hard for our players to compete against them,'' Suparat said.

At the 2014 Asian Games, the Philippines came in fifth while Thailand were seventh.

Rugby sevens was last held at the 2007 SEA Games in Nakhon Ratchasima where Thailand won both gold medals.

Meanwhile, sporting goods manufacturer Grand Sport yesterday handed Thai athletes and officials uniforms for the Singapore Games.

Grand Sport executive Thara Pluchcha-oom said the company, which has sponsored the National Olympic Committee of Thailand since 2005, has produced the uniforms under the concept 'Warriors'.

"All athletes are like warriors who fight for their countries,'' he said.

"We want our athletes to fight for our country."
