Poll: People like first car scheme

Seven out of every 10 people support the government’s first time car-buyers programme, Nida Poll of the National Institute of Development Administration (Nida) reported on Wednesday.

The pollsters surveyed 1,248 people of all education levels and occupations nationwide, seeking their opinions on the first car scheme on Nov 16 and 17.

This is frightening, not a single comment / observation about the potential dangers of more cars driven by unlicenced, untrained, unpoliced drivers.
Traffic in bangkok is insane already and for there alone how can more cars be of benefit. In the rest of Thailand shouldn't emphasis be on improvement of driving standards and the standard of traffic policing. Surely more cars will equal more danger

Didn't they missed out that a large percentage of people who joined the scheme fell into debt because they can't pay off the monthly car loans? Not to mention putting the country in more debt with heavy borrowing to finance this scheme. There is no limit to who can qualified, this scheme has benefited the middle to high income the most.

Posters here constantly condem "populist" policies like the car scheme on the basis that they are just a reward for the 'pop' that voted you into power and yet they assume that these new cars will end up clogging the roads in BKK. Strange!

Considering Bangkok’s already heavily congested road situation, this “first-time car owner scheme” is akin to adding “oil into the fire”. Whichever way one looks at this program, the only real winners are those people in the automobile industries; those who bought under this scheme will ended up paying more than they had bargained for. On hind sight, this survey ought to target new car owners who bought under this scheme about their new found “experiences”.

Let's see, why would more people want a car in Bangkok? 1) Cars are expensive. 2) Fuel is expensive. 3) Traffic is horrible. 4)Once you get where you are going, there is no place to park. But other than that ...

  • Discussion 8 : 21 Nov 2012 at 17.368

Also in other countries the rebates government give are refunded back to them from the auto companies.
So the Governments don't actually give anything.
    Just makes them look good!

All those people believing - or claiming to believe - that this scheme is an example of "giving money" to the people should realise that these are NOT handouts. They are NOT subsidies. They are deductions on taxes, and that's something entirely different.

Where was this survey taken? In Bangkok,Phuket,Chang mai or where.
    What a joke survey!
Do the people of Thailand accept these Surveys when they are like clouds?
Everytime some Company or Government give big rebates for a product you will have people fly in without giving a great deal of thought to the purchase.
Now I am sure most people in Bangkok don't want more vehicles on the road.
    It's Nightmare already!
Who would encourage that type of thinking.
Why doesn't the Government spend money on new infrastructure, more skytrains etc.
That would benefit everyone, not just a few!

Poll says that that governemnt is hiring people to do polls .Bangkok needs more cars like a hole in the head. There is gridlock pretty much all day everyday .Parents are forced to drive their kids to school all over the city because nobody will reform education so that is 4 trips in heavy traffic plus the expnse of having to run a second car for that purpose .Look to developed countries .They are discouraging car use for public transport .That means more trains and subways .Maybe if politicians didnt have so much PTT stock and they didnt get police escorts every where they could wake up and smell the pollution .

Private transportation is not the answer this country needs. All eyes and minds should be on public transportation.
