Japan funds ring road restoration

Japan will allocate 1 billion baht in financial support to help restore Bangkok's eastern outer ring road to serve transport during any future flooding, Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt said.

Mr Chadchart said the ring road, which is part of Highway No.9, is significant for the transport of goods from industrial estates in Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani, as it is linked to Laem Chabang port in Chon Buri.

The restoration work would ease transport problems in the event of a large flood, he said.

The minister said the Department of Highways (DOH) will sign an agreement to hire a Japanese firm to carry out the project. The work, which covers more than 15km, is due to be completed in December next year.

DOH director-general Chatchawan Boonjaroenkit said the department had asked that the contractors ensure minimal inconvenience for motorists while the work is in progress.
