Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez lost his battle with cancer Tuesday, silencing the leading voice of the Latin American left and plunging his divided oil-rich nation into an uncertain future.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who struggled to hold back tears as he announced Chavez's death, said the government had deployed the armed forces and police "to accompany and protect our people and guarantee the peace."

Khun Flashflood #11, can you tell me exactly how Chavez helped the poor Venezuelans? Things like milk, eggs, and etc, may be expensive before Chavez, but after him became their Presidente, those things became hardly available. But why? The reason is he simply destroyed the market mechanism in which those things were produced. Today, Venezuela is worse off than before, despite of sitting on a large oil reserve. As I said before, at least, he died a rich socialist. If he stayed true to his socialist principle, where did the $2 billion of his personal fortune come from? Yes, you got it, from the stiff backs of the poor Venezuelans!

One of those rare South American politicians who succeeded in two key areas: he kept his campaign promises to help the poor of Venezuela. And he survived all CIA attempts to stage a coup and assassinate him.

It's almost humorous to read some of these writings condemning the USA for RULING other country's economics by force. Obviously you have a slant on the USA and history that is made up by yourselves and other communists. There is nothing that can be proved to YOU-You are convinced, so I certainly won't try. I will just read and laugh at your own ignorance.

D7 : It's nice to be able to agree with you and your comment on the U.S. is spot on. To become a "friend" of the U.S.,you have to bend over and let their banking elite and their multinational corporations rape you. In essence,you have to let THEIR foreign policy dominate YOUR domestic policy and in effect become a vassal state/colony of the U.S.

Problem is that to politicians like Chavez and to countries like Venezuela, especially in latin-America, the U.S. does not leave much choice. If you are not a friend of America, you automatically become its enemy and they will use every possible propaganda to label you ( communist, anti-democratic and so on... as if CIA-backed Pinochet and Noriega were democratic leaders... ). And to be a friend of the U.S. means you must accept to serve the interests of their multinationals and thus become their colony, not politically but economically. The Romans did the same, a long time ago, only with different methods and strategies.
