An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 occurred in the South Pacific on Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake struck some 140 kilometres northeast of Fiji's Ndoi Island, roughly 300km northwest of Tonga.
It registered at a depth of 434km.
No tsunami alert was issued and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, news outlets reported.
The area is known for regular seismic activity resulting from collisions between continental plates.
