In his letter, ''In Defence of Muslims'', Mahamas Kromas continually mixes up nationalism with religion. Christianity was indeed a brutal religion but this was during the Middle Ages, when the church was burning, torturing and murdering ''heretics''. By the same token, Saladin, who led the Islamic armies into the Holy Land, did no better. Mr Kromas, read your history book.

D3 Now I get it. The way to fix "Thaksin's dictatorial stranglehold on power, growing suppression of press freedom and personal liberty and his pillaging of the country" was for the military to create a bigger dictatorial stranglehold on power, more suppression of press freedom and personal liberty and more pillaging of the country.

There is no true democracy in Thailand, most politicians spend a few hundred bahts for each vote, that is their investment!

D2: The very sad fact is that many people ARE weak, very weak. Otherwise, why would religion (or any other 'cult' group) be able to gain such a hold over so many?

Dr Kuldeep - The way to prevent coups is to establish a true democracy. Coups cannot occur in democratic countries. The fact ther their is coup after coup in Thailand is proof that the country is not a democracy and it should not publicise itself as a democracy.

Dr Kuldeep - it was important that visiting premiers are shown the true situation here, although they are already aware of the appalling governance experienced in Thailand. People want democracy not a corrupt, dictatorial system. Phue Thai were not democratically elected as there can only be a democractically elected government in a true democracy. They were voted into power with a majority of votes but there is far more to a democracy than simply having the right to vote.

ringmaster - It was intended to be secret but was discovered when the house belonging to another member of the Brotherhood was raided by the FBI. There is not space in a letter to explain all details but readers are expected realise that. Due to Wikileaks, many secret documants have been discover, were they not very secret either. Secrecy is often brought to light, do you ot realise that? There is rather more to the letter than a trivial a observation intended to display cleverness.

I agree with you. Except, with his dictatorial stranglehold on power, growing supression of press freedom and personal liberty and his pillaging of the country, there was no other means in 2006 to remove Thaksin, except a coup.
The problem was that the coup government was made up of incompetent, doddering old men. What was needed (and still is) was and alternative: young, new and untainted blood to lead the government. Then with a real choice, perhaps actual democratic elections could have been held, for once.

Coups arent the answer although I danced in the street when Thaksin was taken out of power .Enforcement of laws and real punishments is .He wouldnt even have been PM if the law had been followed .Man up and enforce the law .

People need to create and believe in belief systems. Without them, they would feed naked (yikes, no clothes!). It's a crutch. Real truth is found in science, and joy and wonderment is found in nature - not in some dictatorial, stifling, hyper-disciplinary, mean-spirited belief system.
