Another teacher slain, what’s next?

The terrorists in the far South waited all of 23 days before they murdered their first teacher this year. Chonlathee Charoenchol, 51, was the 158th teacher slain in the nine years since the extremists launched their insurgency with the violent robbery of a military armoury on Jan 4, 2004.

Chonlathee was aged 51 when he was shot dead in front of his students at Ban Tanyong school in Bacho district, Narathiwat, on Wednesday. Four men barged into the canteen where he was supervising a large group of students as they were praying before lunch.

The fact that the attack took place during prayers raises questions about exactly who was behind this.

Khun Eric #1 & #2, terrorists don't play by the rule, so your referendum's idea (regardless of the outcome) will make no different whatsoever. Hoping for them to get tired of murdering innocent people is not going to work neither. So, the only way to secure the Deep South is to reopen the textbook on counterterrorism and do it by the book. It is always expensive to have to conquer the same piece of real estate twice, but it looks like we have no choice. May be we can send the bill to TS who messed it all up in the first place.

What's next? I think it's right time for a referendum in the south. With more killings of Muslims and senseless bombing of Muslim establishments, the support for independence may now lose its appeal and support. Most will want to see a normality in life after 6 years of random killings. A strong mandate from the people will be an endorsement for the police and military to cooperate in resources and intelligence to weed out the rogues and bring the ideologists to the negotiating table.

The reports from other media mentioned that the school did not want any security in the premise. They only request for teacher security to and from the school. Perhaps they feel that the school was not the high risk area and that it is a Thai Muslim school. Throw up the question whether the south has starting to move away from the original separatist agenda. If that was the agenda, they shouldn't be killing their own kind and lose their support. I think there is an internal conflict within the ideologists and criminal elements which necessitate some re-thinking by the police and military.
