Spoofs won't solve issues

Re: ''My spoof Democrat letter'' (Postbag, BP, Jan 24).

I read with mirth Songkran Grachangnetara's spoof of the Democrat Party's open letter. However, I also found that on the bottom of the online version of his letter, as of the moment I am writing this, more people had clicked ''dislike'' than ''like''.

Thailand needs all its brilliant minds to think up brilliant ideas for its future. The country needs good politicians in the opposition as much as in the government. And straightforward condemnation is much more effective than heaping scorn.

reble4ever - thanks, I didn't realize that 2 separate licenses were issued, in most countries it is just a different classification on a single license such as permitted to drive a school bus etc. Still I do get into many double price venues with my Thai drivers licence.

Disc 6: The answer is simple. A driving license for my car and an other one for my chopper (heavy motorbike). Although having 1000 CC does unfortunately not have the same rights and duties as cars have like in the US and Europe; giving me a lot to do with the cops... But that's an other matter.

    Well said Thai Ridgeback.

rebel4ever -How can you have 2 Thai driving licences? Kao Yai charges me the same as Thai when I present my 1 Thai driving licence.

Disc 1: Try the waterfalls on Koh Chang, try Ayutthaya, try Kao Yai Natioanl Park even the Aquarium in Paragon shopping mall. I've two Thai driving licenses, a Thai Tax-ID, speaking some Thai and still have to pay more being a tall, blue-eyed long nose farang... It's time to call Brussels to demand the same for Thai visiting Europe...

Thai ridge back has hit on a very important factor for many problems we have .

Maybe Thailand should remove the hefty import tax's on foreign goods, even food products before complaining. And 3-400 % tax on imported cars is outrageous.

I imagine more than a few Thai people will be offended by Thai Ridgeback's letter. Sweeping generalisations as well as an insult to the majority of decent and considerate people. The majority of politicians and business leaders put themselves ahead of others the world over, that's how they end up where they are. They do not represent the 'ways' of the everyday people they represent. And of course no letter would be complete without a mention of the devil incarnate, the fugitive, the malevolent Mr Thaksin. If you want to cite someone as an example of the 'Thai way', I really do not think this is the guy you should be choosing.

I think it's a bit of a push to compare trade barriers and protectionism (of which both Thailand and the US are guilty) to charging foreigners ten bucks to enter a national park.

I don't like dual pricing either, but to be fair I've never had to pay the foreigner price in as long as I've had a tax id and work permit. And none of my friends have either. I wonder which national parks Mr Barre has been going to.
