Postbag: Take power crisis to heart

We are reading a lot these days about the power shortage that may or may not happen at the beginning of April. Contingency plans are being drawn up and people are being asked to use less electricity.

It's a good time for the manufacturers of portable generators.

One measure I haven't yet seen mentioned is any suggestion that all government offices turn their air conditioning systems up from 18C to 24C or 25C.

You need a university degree to do anything here beyond labourer but it doesn't mean anything other than you have paid tuition into the system. Coming out the other side you have people with a piece of paper and everybody has a party. Then for the poorer ones you begin the job of paying back the tuition loans with interest. A nice closed system.

I think you’re missing the point where most countries would accept anybody enthusiastic and have a high school education
In Thailand the system is so broke that you need to advertise for somebody with a degree which would be the equivalent of a high school education elsewhere in the world
Like i have mentioned before I have a relative who teaches English in a school but cannot hold a English conversation with me !!!!!!

Why do Tour guides need University degrees. A good knowledge of their area is all that is needed. A well know car sales room near me was advertising for sales 'executives' with a degree. A degree to be a car salesman????

D1: If you want to live without AC, that's fine. But I need my AC. If I have to do without, then I will leave Thailand, as I am sure would many other expats.

I don't agree with Mazel. I have hill tribe friends in northern Thailand - any one of which would make a fine tour guide. They're not allowed to be guides because their lack of enough formal education restricts them. BTW, they also speak better English than any Thai U graduates I've ever met.
