Postbag: Blood on their own hands

Re: ''Blood on the railway tracks'' (BP, March 12).

With regard to the nearly 300 people who have been killed by unauthorised railroad crossing throughout Thailand, this is indeed unfortunate.

The custom is, worldwide, that when you come to railroad tracks _ in the country, on the prairie, in a city, anywhere _ even if you do not see a train on the horizon, you stop, look both ways, then proceed.

    re: 'Motorsai' not worth risk

Thanks to two accidents on the back of motorcycle taxis in the last year, I am partially crippled, need knee replacement surgery and of course the drivers got away scott free.

They are not regulated, drive like maniacs and don't have any insurance.

Anyone who takes a motorcycle taxi is playing Russian Roulette.

    Ray Gregory

Are we talking about tourists or expats? These are two totally different issues. People over 65 have no problem getting a travel insurance for a holiday lasting a couple of weeks. As for expats and their difficulties in getting insurance while living here in Thailand, well that's an issue for insurance companies to dela with, and has got nothing to do with making sure the average tourist is insured.

Ray Gregory, since when has health insurance been unavailable to ex-pats over 65? My current one is good until I'm 72 and then I can just renew.

High speed trains will create much more exciting accidents .I never use motorbike taxis although I ride a motorbike .Many can be rude drunk reckless and throw their garbage everywhere as they set up their make shift hangouts made of stolen umbrellas and broken pieces of wood to wait for rides .They will also make up prices if you don't know the price .The traffic in Pattaya has already reached Bangkok level .

One more reason Thailand will never see a high speed train, the windscreen of which would be spattered daily with humans and Toyota Hi-Lux's.

It is already Pattaya's problem. Weekends sees pretty much every single first car buyer cruising Pattaya disregarding virtually every traffic law on their way to spending the 100,000 Baht savings they received when buying the car that will eventually get repo'ed when they can not make the payments. It will only get worse when they start work on the Sukumvit tunnels ( expect 10 years to complete those) as it took 5+ years to do a road to Jomtien.
