Reds need to wise up

Re: ''Revised flood plan fails to cut B350bn cost to taxpayers'' (BP, March 14).

Again a story appears to illustrate how politicians are myopic, self-centred and self-serving. The article says water retention areas will be centred in the North and Northeast, to keep water as far away from Bangkok as possible, and to avoid paddy flooding in the Central provinces.

These people act as if northerners and northeasterners are nothing but expendable chaff and not worth dealing with. As long as precious Bangkok is flood-free, to hell with the rest of the population.

'come down hard on and eliminate the trade in shark fins, elephant tusks, rhino horns, bear paws and other animal parts that have no beneficial effect on the human body'.

These assorted animal parts should remain affixed to their owners even if they were beneficial to the human body.

Yes, the garbage will still be dumped in to the sea, but MARPOL enables any signatories to take legal action against any other signatories if dumping occurs. Thailand, by not signing the treaty, is thumbing its nose at the world community saying: "ah ha, you can't touch us for dumping trash, because we didn't sign your silly treaty!"

David Brown: Two points - firstly I walk everywhere in Bangkok and past a number of Motorsai ranks where, during off peak times, the riders are often drinking cheap whisky and soda or Leo beer. Secondly, over 80% of annual fatalities on Thailand roads are motorcycle drivers and riders and 47% of those involve motor cycle drivers affected by alcohol. In my 7 years in Thailand I have never used a motorsai and never will - no matter how far I have to walk! Do you wear a helmet? If not, live life in the fast lane and die on the roadway!

To David Brown, and other farang who use the motorcycle taxies... It can take only one accident to change your life forever.
Think about that the next time you climb onto that motorsai.

Corruption is at the root of perhaps most problems in Thailand, and countless animal and sea life as well as people die because of it. Then to top it off we read that the 2.5 trillion Baht Budget is going to be diverted into the constituencies of the Pheu Thai MPs where no doubt the customary 35%+ will be siphoned off. That's roughly 900 billion of tax payers' money that will probably be lost to "those who cannot be mentioned" in addition to the 350 billion flood relief fund + a large part of the rice scheme + ... + ... Maybe it's time for the Thais to wake up to how they are being used. The laughter of the offshore banks is deafening.

David Brown, I know what you mean about motorcycle taxis, but I had to laugh a little. You don't like 'driving' in the crazy Bangkok traffic, but you will ride on the back of a motor bike in the crazy Bangkok traffic. You have to admit that that just make people say 'what'.

    RE Plastic not so fantastic
Ken it wouldn't make any real difference if Thailand signed or not because the trash will still get dumped anyway. No matter how many laws on whatever are passed in Thailand unless they are enforced people will just ignore them.
