Paws for thought on environmental health

My previous Think Box shared how my pet pooch, Khiew Waan, was diagnosed with canine transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), which is a common type of urinary bladder cancer.

It can be caused by harmful environmental factors such as the use of herbicides and pesticides and I wondered how she got exposed to these toxic chemicals. One day, I noticed how roadside plants in front of a neighbour's house wilted and dropped dead whereas weeds elsewhere were still green.

These unwanted plants grow out of the cracks of the concrete road and paving. And no matter how many times you use weed killers to get rid of them, they can recolonise themselves, and the killing happens again and again _ it's just a continual vicious circle.
