I never thought that the government's rice-pledging scheme policy would directly impact me, my family or my friends - middle class people.
But one day when my father opened a 5kg pack of unpolished Hom Mali rice from a well-known brand, he had a nasty surprise. "The rice was so dirty," he said. Instead of mixing it with other unpolished red rice and white jasmine rice, he decided to try cooking only the brown rice that he just bought from a hypermarket.
He said after he poured water on the rice, the water turned a dark muddy colour. He washed the rice again, again and again. He said that throughout his 77 years, he had never seen this kind of dirty rice. His trust in that brand is totally gone.
