Japanese tourist commits harakiri

SURAT THANI - A Japanese tourist has committed suicide by disemboweling himself, according to police.

Police received a report on Thursday that a foreign tourist had been found dead by a hotel employee, who entered a room at the Princess Park Hotel in tambon Makham Tia in Muang district of Surat Thani province when the man failed to check out at the agreed time.

The body of a Japanese man in his late-20s was discovered lying face down. Next to him was a bloodied knife which police later collected as evidence. There was no sign of struggle inside the room.

After reviewing the hotel's security cameras' footage, superintendent of Muang Surat Thani Police Pol Col Suwat Suksri reported that the man checked in on Wednesday and left the room twice - once to ask hotel staff for a city map and secondly to purchase items, including the knife he used to kill himself, at a shop across the street.

The investigator assumed that the man committed suicide by disemboweling himself

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
