Riot police killed, injured in crash

ANG THONG: A riot police officer was killed and nine others injured when an official van they were travelling in collided with a taxi on Ayutthaya-Ang Thong Road in Pa Mok district. All had been deployed at Saturday’s Pitak Siam anti-government rally.

The van was carrying officers of Pa Mok police station who were returning from their assignment in Bangkok. They had almost reached their station when the accident occurred near Phaya Thai intersection on Sunday afternoon, Post Today website reported.

The report quoted Pol Col Chudej Kongkanpai, deputy Ang Thong police chief, as saying that the van was slowing down and had its siren turned on when it neared the intersection. It collided forcefully with a taxi travelling from another road from Ayutthaya province.

The collision instantly killed Pol Cpl Sarawut Lawong and wounded nine officers, four seriously.

Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
