Tavor rifles found in Kanchanaburi

KANCHANABURI: Ten Israeli-made Tavor assault rifles were found by the side of a road in Tha Maka district early Sunday morning, according to a Post Today report.

The weapons were found by the side of Tha Rua-Phra Taen Road in tambon Ta Rua, about 500 metres from the local police station’s checkpoint.

A resident discovered the weapons in a sack and alerted the police.

The report said when officers at the station reported the discovery to their superiors, they were told to quickly deliver the weapons to Crime Investigation Division Provincial Police Region 7 in Nakhon Pathom province.

Later, military officers from the 9th Infantry Division, Surasi Military Camp, in Muang district of Kanchanaburi, turned up at the station to check the rifles.

Police told them the weapons had been sent to the Crime Investigation Division Provincial Police Region 7 in the morning and their superiors would later hold a press conference to provide facts and information about the guns.

Members of the press who went to the Tha Rua police station were given no further details by officers.

Residents of the area immediately speculated that the weapons might have been connected to the Pitak Siam anti-government rally at Royal Plaza on Saturday. Their opinion was that the gun owners might have tried to smuggle the rifles into the capital, but then decided to leave them by the road when they encountered a police checkpoint where every vehicle heading to Bangkok was being searched.

The Thai army first used the Israeli rifles in 2007. That year, the Defence Ministry purchased more than 15,000 5.56mm Tavor TAR-21 assault rifles at a cost of 960 million baht from Israel.
