Brit drowns as tourists flee Thai gang

CHON BURI – A tourist has drowned after jumping into the sea in Pattaya to escape a local gang that was pursuing him and two friends.

Police and rescuers, reacting to reports of the incident, found the body of Patrick Lawrence Molloy, 28, a British national, according to Khao Sod.

A fisherman pulled his body out of the water and tried CPR on him, but it was too late, according to the report.

Rescuers were able to save the other two men, named as James Wilks, 29, and Jerry Robson, 30, who were found hundreds of metres from the shore.

Police said Mr Wilks swam out and took refuge on a yacht about 500 metres from the shore, while Mr Robson was found floating in the water about 300 metres away.

According to witnesses, the three tourists were being chased by five or six Thai men when they ran out into the sea and swam away in different directions. Both groups of men appeared drunk, a witness told police.

The fisherman said Molloy was able to hang on to a rope hanging from a banana boat but apparently passed out and lost his grip and then drowned.

The rescued tourists were in shock. Police took them to their hotel and said they will take statements from them today to help identify the men they were running from.
