Indonesia to increase holiday security

JAKARTA – National Police will reinforce security in seven areas of Indonesia thought to be possible targets for terrorist attacks over Christmas and New Year.

East Java, Central Java, Jakarta, North Sumatra, Central Sulawesi, Bali and Maluku will all receive extra attention from police.

“There are several regional police jurisdictions that have received special attention,” Insp. Gen Badrodin Haiti, the National Police’s assistant head of operations, told the Jakarta Globe.

The security operation will run from Dec 23 through Jan 1, with beefed up security at Indonesia’s nearly 40,000 churches, on roads, train stations, bus terminals, tourism sites and shopping malls.

Indonesia was rocked by a series of synchronised bombs at several churches and police stations nationwide on Christmas Eve in 2000, carried out by terror group Jemaah Islamiyah.
