Virach demands FAT election date be set

Former Thailand team manager Virach Charnpanich has urged the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to confirm a date for the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) presidential election.

The election was originally scheduled to be held between March and June _ the previous election, for a two-year term, was held on June 17, 2011.

Virach pointed out, though, that the 2011 election was delayed, after being scheduled for March, and urged the SAT to establish a date for this year's vote.

"We must have the election according to the regulation of the sports association, which should be in March," he said. "The previous election was delayed. Therefore, the SAT should come and do their duty and be clear."

Virat would not be drawn on whether he would be one of the candidates.

"I have to wait for the members of the clubs to approach me," he said. "I have not yet decided. This is because there is no movement on the election at the moment."

Meanwhile, the FAT president, Worawi Makudi, suggested the future of Winfried Schaefer, Thailand's head coach, could depend on the results of the King's Cup and the first qualifying match for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup against Kuwait.

"In the King's Cup tournament, where the Thai team has not had success for a long time, we must at least reach the final," Worawi said.

"In the Asian Cup qualifying round, where we will take on Kuwait on Feb 6, we must get three points."

Worawi said that Schaefer's results last year were pleasing but that performances this year were crucial to the coach being retained.

"This will be the year when we make the decision on Schaefer," he said.

"Last year, we began with the World Cup qualification round and, although we were knocked out, we had a better result than any teams in the Asean region. For the AFF Suzuki Cup, although we could not win the title, our goal was to reach the final and we did it."
