Expensive parking

Parking at Phitsanulok Airport is expensive – 70,000 baht a month for just two spots.

Of course, these are not ordinary parking spots. They are located just outside the passenger terminal and they are currently occupied by two Boeing 747 jets.

The decommissioned planes have been there since 2008 and they belong to budget carrier Orient Thai. The engines have been removed from both aircraft.

Orient Thai had originally rented the two Boeing planes for use in its domestic aviation business.

However, after the rental contract expired, the owner did not ask for them back. This left the company to shoulder heavy parking costs at Bangkok's main Suvarnabhumi airport, prompting the move to Phitsanulok.

Now airport officials want the planes removed, but there is a problem.

The two planes have been under investigation since March 2011 because Crime Suppression Division police suspected parts were being secretly sold to avoid taxes.

The police have not pressed charges against the airline but have ordered the airport not to move the planes until the case is finalised.

Yesterday Director of Phitsanulok Airport Kasem Intasorn called on police to quickly wrap up their investigation.

Meanwhile, the planes have become something of a tourist attraction, with curious passengers taking pictures before leaving the airport.

Each aircraft now bears a sign saying, "This plane is to be donated for educational purposes".
