Toyota to import Australian engines

Toyota Australia announced Friday it will begin exporting four-cylinder automobile engines to Thailand and Malaysia this year.

The company said it expects to make at least 108,000 engines for Camry and Camry Hybrid cars, and will export 18,000.

"Our employees have worked incredibly hard to secure the investment for the new engine plant and ensure that we are producing the best quality engines," said executive director of manufacturing and purchasing Chris Harrod in a statement carried in the Australian trade journal Manufacturers' Monthly.

No other details were immediately available.

The news came as Australian sales figures showed that the Toyota HiLux was the country's top-selling vehicle in October of last year, with 3,403 sold.
