Mahidol in world's 50 green campuses

Mahidol University has been ranked first in Thailand – and 36th internationally – for its environmental performance in the latest GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities.

There were 215 universities from 49 countries studied in the just released survey, which is now in its third year. This year, University of Connecticut in the United States was ranked first, followed by the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and University College Cork National University of Ireland.

Three other Thai universities are also in the top 50 including King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi , ranked 38, Chulalongkorn University (41) and Kasetsart University (44).

The GreenMetric ranking system is initiated by Universitas Indonesia as an opportunity for institutions worldwide to compare their efforts towards campus sustainability and environment friendly university management.

Results are based on information provided by universities on six main categories including their green statistics (15%), energy and climate change (21%), waste management (18%), water usage (10%), transportation (18%), and education (18%).

Nine universities from Taiwan were placed in the top 50, making it the place with the highest number of campuses with "green" management policies in Asia. Indonesia had two rankings in the group, while Malaysia and Singapore had one each.
