German dies of soft drink overdose

An anorexic 81-year-old German woman has reportedly died in Thailand after drinking too many soft drinks over a three-month period.

Bertha Hess passed out on Tuesday night at her son's house in Muang district of Roi Et province and was rushed to Roi Et Hospital.

The woman later died at the hospital, Thai Rath reported on Wednesday, quoting Pol Maj Preecha Khamthongkiew of the Muang district police station.

A doctor on duty at the hospital said the woman died of heart failure caused by poor nutrition.

The woman's 50-year-old son, Michael, told police that he recently asked his mother to travel from Germany to Thailand. She was old and also forgetful and he thought that it would be better for her to move in with him, he said.

His mother had no problem adjusting to the food in Thailand until mid-October last year, when she started to become anorexic and developed the habit of drinking several bottles of soft drinks every day, he said.

He added that his mother sometimes went missing during the night and returned home the next morning.
