Bangkok police have arrested a couple on drug charges and seized illegal drugs with an estimated street value of 40 million baht on Friday.

Police named the suspects as Tonchai Boonsongkusolsil and Aomjai Buranrom, both 23 years old.

They were arrested at their home near Bang Khun Thian district. Police found 2,000 speed pills and 13 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine hidden in the house.

Tonchai, the husband, confessed that he was convicted for possession of narcotics back in 2007 and was later released. His parents were also convicted on drug charges and are now serving time in prison, he added.

According to Tonchai's testimony, he was informed by an inmate that a woman named Ann (last name not given) was looking for a drug courier to deliver 80,000 yaba pills and 20 kilogrammes of ya ice to clients in the capital city.

Ann was willing to pay the 680,000 baht for the delivery, he said.

Aomjai said she was not involved in the drug business but police received reports that the woman was the driver of the truck that was seen delivering the merchandise.

Police have charged the husband and wife with possession of illegal drugs and will investigate further.
