Traffic police are cracking down on passenger van operators in Bangkok who violate traffic rules.
Traffic Police Division chief Piya Tavichai said Sunday the crackdown on passenger vans would help make the streets safer and less congested and would begin Monday.
Many complaints had been lodged with the division against commuter van drivers causing traffic jams, Pol Maj Gen Piya said. They blamed passenger van operators for failing to abide by the traffic rules.
Van drivers without licences will face a jail term of up to two years and a fine of up to 40,000 baht.
Those who have public driving licences but fail to carry them while driving will face a 5,000-baht fine.
Drivers could be fined up to 5,000 baht if they pick up or drop off passengers outside designated spots.
A 500-baht fine will be imposed on drivers who stop their vans in a way that blocks traffic.
Operators of passenger vans that violate the legal passenger limit will be fined up to 5,000 baht.
Those who fail to renew third-party insurance will be liable to a fine of up to 5,000 baht.
They will be fined up to 10,000 baht if the third-party insurance does not match the type of their vehicles.
Operators of vans unlicensed to function as commercial passenger vehicles will be liable to a jail term of up to five years and a fine between 20,000-100,000 baht.
