The snakes were seized at Suvarnabhumi airport on Thursday after being returned from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong customs officials found more than 2,000 live cobras inside 203 crates falsely labelled as fruit which had been sent as air freight from Thailand. After discovering the snakes, customs officials sent them back to Suvarnabhumi airport.

Theerapat Prayurasiddhi, deputy chief of the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, said the freight invoice showed the shipment belonged to AK International Co Ltd.

He said the shipment of snakes broke wildlife protection and customs laws. The snakes will be taken to the wildlife breeding centre in Khao Son in Ratchaburi for examination. Some will be released back into the wild.
