First Asean hit: "A Thai Love Song"

It might be the first Asean hit. "A Thai Love Song" by Malaysian artist Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee (My name is Wee), has quickly become a YouTube sensation since it was uploaded on February 7.

As of this morning, it had been viewed more than 450,000 times with about 9,600 likes and only 70 dislikes.

"A Thai Love Song" follows a formula that other Asean artists may want to emulate. It's funny. It is an easily understood cross-cultural love story told in three regional languages (with subtitles) and it was filmed in many popular Thai locations such as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Democracy Monument, Khao San Road and Hat Yai.

It is about a Malaysian man falling in love with a Thai woman. The man, played by 29-year-old Namewee himself, tries to win her heart by showing her that he is acquainted with the Thai culture, language and lifestyle.

Following a guidebook on winning the heart of a Thai woman, he tries, rather unsuccessfully, to woo the woman he fell in love with while walking outside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

When the guidebook's tips fail, he angrily throws away the book (while seated next to the moat outside Chitralada Palace) and, in the funniest scene in the video, it lands at the feet of a monk.

Shocked, Namewee quickly apologises. When the monk sees the title of the book, he suggests, in Thai, that Namewee simply try to be himself.

Instant enlightenment. Namewee thanks the monk and rushes off.

Surprised, the monk says "You understand Thai?"

"Subtitles," replies the departing Namewee.
