Japanese man plummets to his death

A Japanese tourist fell 27 stories to his death from a balcony at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Bang Rak district of Bangkok early Thursday, police said.

It was thought the man's recent relationship with a Thai woman might be related to his death, which was being treated as suicide, a report said on Thursday.

The man was identified as a businessman named Sukita (last name not known), 58. He travelled to Thailand as part of a tour group along with five friends, the report said.

Police said they had obtained footage of Sukita from the hotel's security cameras, one showing the man leaving his room about 4am and another showing him walking near the one of the hotel's balconies.

The victim's friends told the police they all went to a nightclub the previous evening. Sukita was intimately tied up with a woman, but she had not been seen with him lately.

Police said a half-empty bottle of liquor and an ashtray full of cigarette stubs was found in the man's room. There were no signs of a struggle, they added.
