Twitter index: HIV 'cure,' Miriam Makeba

On Monday, March 4, Twitter users are buzzing about the news that scientists appear to have cured a baby in Mississippi of HIV and talking about the Google Doodle celebrating civil rights activist Miriam Makeba's birthday.

Medical history was made when doctors in Mississippi, USA, announced that they appeared to have effectively cured a two-and-a-half year old child who was born with HIV.

After being treated with drugs just after birth, the unnamed child still has the virus, but at such low levels that she now needs no medication for the treatment of HIV, is highly unlikely to be infectious to others and is expected to have a normal life expectancy.

This breakthrough in medical science accounts for two of today's trending topics, tenth placed "VIH," a French term for "HIV," and ninth-placed "HIV."

Elsewhere on Twitter microbloggers are celebrating what would have been South African musician and singer Miriam Makeba's 81st birthday. The civil rights activist died in 2008 at the age of 76 and during her lifetime was responsible for campaigning against the South African apartheid and releasing the hit song "Pata Pata." Her birthday is marked by a Google Doodle on Google South Africa at google.co.za featuring an illustration of the singer against a patterned brown background.
