Thai-Laos border cooperation accord

Thailand and Laos agreed to jointly address six border-related issues it was announced after the 8th meeting of the Thai-Laos border provincial group on Friday.

Agreement was announcd by Thai Interior Minister Jarupong Ruangsuwan and Lao Security Minister Thongban Sengaphone.

Thailand and Laos will collaborate on dealing with cases involving imprisonment  of their respective citizens, suppressing illegal drug trafficking along the border, and keeping the border in place, reports said.

The two nations will also work towards improving border checkpoints, encouraging provincial teams from both countries to work together in ensuring peace along the border, and creating communication channels between the provincial teams.

Mr Jarupong hailed the meeting as a success, saying it strengthened the relationship between the two countries. In the long run, having good relations with Laos also allows Thailand to improve link to other countries in the region, he added.

The three-day meeting was held in Thailand and concluded on Friday.It was attended by provincial governors from 12 Thai provinces, including Phitsanulok and Nakhon Pathom, and nine provinces in Laos, including Vientiane and Savannakhet.
