An assistant village chief was shot dead in Yarang district of Pattani province on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the attack occurred about 3.30pm as Maming Dueramae, 56, assistant chief of Ban Jueraebongo in tambon Khao Tum, was travelling on a motorcycle to visit his daughter at Ban Laewae.
Two men, also on a motorcycle, followed him. The pillion rider opened fire with a 9mm pistol, hitting Maming once in the chest and three times in the head, killing him instantly.
