Tida, Jatuporn to see Thaksin in HK

Three leading members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) will fly to Hong Kong Tuesday to meet former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to discuss further political moves, UDD deputy chairman Somwang Asrasi said on Monday.

Mr Somwang, secretary to Deputy Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar, said Tida Thawornseth, the UDD chair, Jatuporn Prompan and Nisit Sinthuprai, chairman of the Northeast UDD, would represent the UDD in the meeting with Thaksin.

The three were expected to reveal the outcome of the meeting with Thaksin to a meeting of UDD core members on Wednesday, he said.

Mr Somwang said he personally agreed with government whips in their decision to push for amending the constitution by sections before taking up the amnesty bills for consideration.

Amendments to Section 68, which concerns the power of the Constitution Court, and Section 237 on the dissolution of political parties and the political ban on party executive committee members, were of high urgency, he said.

He said there was less opposition to the constitutional amendment than to the amnesty bills.
